UPDATES! MCGOVERN ACQUITTED

Tara McGovern was acquitted ON BOTH COUNTS by a jury of their peers on March 13th. Below is a wonderful podcast from our dear friend Justin of Rock Hard Media who does an incredible job going over the trial!

Please donate if you are willing to help defray legal fees relating to criminal charges against seven Iowans who were arrested after protesting against hate speech.

The charges include penalties of up to 13 months imprisonment and $3420 in fines, per person.

The seven Iowans who were arrested are all transgender. There were about 100 people who protested that night, many of whom were not trans. No one was cited or arrested at the time of the protest. It was only 4 weeks later that charges were brought. The seven trans protesters--like thousands of others who have marched in the streets of Iowa City in recent years--believed they were safe from the invasion of their rights to freely express themselves against hate.

Donations will support attorney fees and potential fines related to the criminal charges. More information is available at joco6.org

Any leftover funds will be used to support individuals who peacefully protested at Kinnick Stadium on Dec 9 in response to unanswered demands made by several organizations and groups for UI to divest from contracted partnerships with weapons contractors supporting Israel. UIPD and Campus safety had a choice in how to respond. They chose the violent and discriminatory arrest of various peaceful protestors rather than initiating a meeting to discuss community concerns.

People who are brave enough to disagree, critique, and interrupt the actions of institutions and people whose power otherwise goes unquestioned deserve to be supported.
